Winnemucca is situated on the Humboldt River in the southeastern corner of Humboldt County. As the town which grew up was named for the principal Indian chief of the Paiute tribe in northern Nevada in the 1860s. Winnemucca is the county seat and a major trade center. It lies 167 miles east of Reno/Sparks and 267 miles southwest of Boise, Idaho.
